September—when summer stubbornly hangs on against that change in the air promising fall–is an ideal time to visit the Shenandoah Valley. Average high temperatures are in the mid-70s—perfect for anything outdoors—hiking, cycling, horseback riding, canoeing, ziplining, or just wading in a pool beneath a waterfall.

Also outdoors you’ll find a huge variety of music and festivals that liven up the Valley at this time of year, too. Just a few examples: The 31st annual Bluegrass in the Park music festival will be held from Sept. 8-10 at Grand Caverns Park in Grottoes, VA.  Lynchburg’s Beer and Wine Festival is September 17th,  and the 17th Annual Apple Butter Celebration at Skyland (MP 41.7 on Skyline Drive) is the same date.  At the northern entrance to Shenandoah National Park, you’ll find the Front Royal Brew and Blues Festival on September 24th.

When you’re ready to slow down and relax with friends, choose from virtually any type of cusine for a memorable dinner, in either a charming small town or a vibrant Valley city. Explore Virginia’s growing reputation for wine at an eye-popping vineyard, or sample craft beer on the new Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail.

Of course, a scenic drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway or Skyline Drive is still spectacular at this time of year and much less crowded than it will be in October.
