I-81 Exit 191 to I-64 Exits 27 and 16A

Nestled in a narrow valley of the Allegheny Mountains, Clifton Forge and Covington are small towns filled with big surprises. Instead of huge, impersonal malls, you’ll find a wonderful variety of shops, boutiques and galleries, most of which are in our downtown districts. Local eateries, main street cafes and comfortable lodging add to this incredible destination.

History is not forgotten in the Allegheny Highlands, just east of Clifton Forge off I-64, are the iron furnace stacks of Longdale Furnace. During the Civil War, the furnace produced the iron for the plates of the CSS Virginia, known for ending the age of wooden war ships, and for its duel with the USS Monitor.

Just 5 miles outside Clifton Forge, Douthat State Park offers the region’s most breathtaking mountain scenery. There are 3 campgrounds, tent & trailer camping, 32 cabins, 3 guest lodges, interpretive programs, special events & dining that overlooks the lake. The Park is open year round.

On US 220 near Clifton Forge, at Iron Gate Gorge, Rainbow Rock curves above the Jackson River, attracting photographers and rock climbers alike. Natural beauty surrounds the region, just visit the Devil’s Backbone, jutting vertically from the hillside adjacent to the spectacular arch formation that gives Rainbow Gap its name.

Covington boasts more splendid attractions. The downtown craft shops display the work of more than 150 artists. Unique Inns, golf and fly fishing along the Jackson River offer the perfect getaway.

A must-see is the famous covered Humpback Bridge crossing Dunlap Creek. It is America’s only surviving curved-span covered bridge, and there is only one other similarly constructed bridge in the world.

In Alleghany County, you can leave the fast-paced world behind and embark upon an adventure that leads to a treasure trove of breathtaking scenery and small town wonders.
