The Caverns

Ten-story ceilings draw your eyes upward, searching for … what? It’s hard to say, really. The vast openness, the intricacies of the calcite formations … how could this place be? It’s been “4 million centuries in the making.” Four. Million. Centuries. to create the delicate drips, folds, and fringes that decorate a cave system so spectacular it’s become the most popular in Eastern America.

“Most fantastic caverns that we have visited.”
-Jim O. from Eugene, OR via TripAdvisor

Luray Caverns is a Registered Natural Landmark featuring excellent examples of pure white calcite (Titania’s Veil), and displaying the union of stalactite to stalagmite for the creation of “one massive wonder of nature” (Giant’s Hall).

“Easy to navigate, even with toddlers in tow. Every turn had a jaw dropping view!”
– Lori M. via TripAdvisor

A can’t-miss cavern attraction is The Great Stalacpipe Organ, the world’s largest musical instrument. How so? Because it literally makes the stalactites sing as it very gently taps three acres of them throughout the cave. A three-acre musical instrument … ponder that for a moment. A quick internet search indicates three acres is equal to 48 tennis courts. That’s substantial.

Beyond the Caverns

With your admission at Luray Caverns you’re also treated to visits to the Car & Carriage Museum (75+ historic vehicles to see), Shenandoah Heritage Village (seven acres of a re-created 19th century farming community complete with gardens, gem mine sluicing, a museum, a café, and a gift shop), and Toy Town Junction (nostalgic toys and trains).

“What made the trip excellent rather than just very good was the maze, the ropes course, and the two museums. You could spend days in the Shenandoah museum …”
-Larry23 of New York, NY via TripAdvisor
