When the Blue Ridge and Allegheny mountains show off their autumnal colors, the Shenandoah Valley becomes one of the best places on the East Coast to chase an epic autumn adventure. Crisp air and golden light are *chef’s kiss* and make fall the ideal season to get outside. Here are five unforgettable ways to spend an autumn day (or five) in the Valley.
Stargaze at Natural Bridge
Few places pair natural wonder with night sky like Natural Bridge State Park, a designated International Dark Sky Park. Just after dusk, the dark night sky lights up with a blanket of stars overhead. Check the park’s calendar for ranger-led night sky programs, and don’t forget your blanket, a thermos of something warm, and a red-light flashlight.

Section-Hike the Appalachian Trail
The Appalachian Trail runs the spine of the Blue Ridge Mountains right through Shenandoah National Park, and autumn is prime time to log some miles. The AT itself threads past overlooks like Hawksbill Summit and Mary’s Rock, while nearby side trails like the famous Old Rag scramble add even more rocky, panoramic payoffs, all delivering sweeping views where the fall foliage rolls out in waves of red, orange, and gold beneath you. The cooler temperatures and thinning tree canopy make fall arguably the best hiking season of the year in the Valley. Just be sure to check trail conditions and wear layers, since mountain weather can shift quickly this time of year.

Ride Mountain Mayhem at Massanutten Resort
For a shot of adrenaline with a view, try your hand at Virginia’s first alpine mountain coaster: Massanutten Resort’s Mountain Mayhem. You can control your own speed along more than 2,000 feet of track and two 360-degree spirals, topping out around 25 miles per hour on the way down. And that’s not all. You’re doing it while soaking in panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley’s fall colors.
Take a Guided Horseback Trail Ride
Slow the pace down and see the Valley the old-fashioned way: from the saddle. Local outfitters like Fort Valley Ranch and Star B Stables offer guided horseback trail rides through wooded hills and open pastures, where postcard-perfect views await. Rides typically suit all levels of experience, with well-trained horses and knowledgeable guides. It’s a quieter kind of adventure, but absolutely memorable.

Soar Above It All on a Hot Air Balloon Ride
For the ultimate bird’s-eye view of autumn in the Valley, book a sunrise or sunset hot air balloon flight with Valley Ballooning or Star Ballooning. As you lift off and the Valley floor falls away, the full mosaic of autumnal color spreads across the mountains, farmland, and river bends below.
Whichever adventures make your list, autumn in the Shenandoah Valley rewards travelers who get outside and look up, whether that’s toward a star-filled sky, a mountain overlook, or the view from a rising balloon basket.
