From one end of Rockbridge County to the other, you’ll find a landscape that stirs the mind, spirit, and intellect. The area is known for its history, charm, and scenic beauty.

Start your visit in Lexington, beginning first with the Stonewall Jackson House on Washington Street, the only home ever owned by Confederate Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Virginia Military Institute and the VMI Museum is close by. Cadets give walking tours of the Post, starting at the George C. Marshall Museum & Library.

Ready for charm? Spend an afternoon strolling the pressed brick sidewalks downtown, browsing in the unique shops and galleries. From antiques to fine lingerie, elegant pumps to delectable handmade chocolates, Lexington has treasures for everyone—and great restaurants, too.

Check out the Shenandoah Beerwerks Trail to taste some of the best craft beer in the country. Relax and enjoy the companionship of good friends amidst some of the nation’s most beautiful farms and mountains, breathe in the scent of ancient forests on a hike, explore a fascinating new community, taste the fresh flavors of a farm-to-table meal, or listen to music under the stars as you discover a new favorite band.

Discover some of the region’s most unique lodging at Applewood Inn and Llama Trekking or Fox Hill Bed & Breakfast Suites. As for the scenery, it’s all around you! If you have an hour or two for something really spectacular, take a drive to Goshen Pass, an awesome three-mile-long mountain gorge formed by the Maury River.

For more out-of-this-world scenery, head south of Lexington to Virginia’s Natural Bridge, a world-renowned rock bridge once owned by Thomas Jefferson, and one of the nation’s most visited natural wonders. Overnight at the historic Natural Bridge Hotel and enjoy a meal in the Colonial Dining Room.

And speaking of zoos, you won’t want to miss the Virginia Safari Park, Virginia’s only drive-through zoo, featuring over 700 animals like antelope, zebra, deer, bison, elk, and many more. The kids will love it!
