Pick Your Adventure at Bryce Resort

Google says that Bryce Resort is only a two-hour and 10-minute drive west of Washington, DC, but it’s a world away in every other sense.

Located in scenic Shenandoah County, Bryce Resort will unleash the adventure-seeker in you. Choose from a state-of-the-art mountain bike park with white-knuckle downhills, ziplining, golf, water sports on Lake Laura, rock wall climbing, adventure racing or a full slate of skiing, snowboarding and tubing in season.

A busy calendar of special events, summer camps, Euro-bungee, and disc golf, make up just some of the other action. Excellent dining can be enjoyed at the Copper Kettle Restaurant.

We (SVTA) queried Bryce’s Jackie Moe to find out more about this multi-faceted facility.

SVTA: Can you tell us a little about when and how Bryce Resort got started?
JM: The Resort was opened in 1965 by the Bryce family. It started with a small ski building and air strip and grew to its current 400 acres; it now includes a ski resort, Lake Laura, a championship golf course, a bike park and many new buildings. The resort is member-owned and welcomes guests to enjoy everything we have to offer. There are different membership levels; you can purchase a basic package with access to the pool, Lake Laura and clubhouse and special discounts, or you can add on and purchase a golf package or ski package. There are many different options. You do not have to come with a member to partake in any of the activities. (More details on membership may be found here.)

SVTA: You offer a great diversity of activities. What do you feel is the most popular–especially in November?
JM: For November, it would be golf and the bike park.

SVTA: We understand the Bike Park has eight lift-accessed trails for beginner and advanced riders. For newbies, can you tell us a little about the mountain biking instruction Bryce offers?
JM: We offer private lessons as well as group lessons and clinics for different experience levels and age ranges–everything from basic to advanced skills. Last month, Sue Haywood and a handful of experienced women instructors led a clinic for Women Only. This group partnered with Bryce to bring in their professional coaches and instructors to host their clinic. We hold children’s camps and teen camps throughout the season. All of our instructors are TERRA method trained and certified.

SVTA: When do you think your winter sports season will begin?
JM: We are prepared to make snow around the end of November, weather permitting.

SVTA: Bryce does not currently have on-site lodging. Is this contemplated for the future?
JM: Yes, we are working on offering on-site camping for the 2020 summer season. We work closely with the local condos, Air BnBs and several hotels to direct people to nearby accommodations.

SVTA: What is the single most important thing you want tourists to know about Bryce?
JM: It is a family – friendly adventure hub offering a diverse range of activities for anyone looking to experience the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Even though we encourage membership to grant access to numerous benefits, Bryce is non-exclusive and welcomes all! While golf and cycling may be the most popular sports at the resort right now, it won’t be long before the snow starts falling, or being manufactured. Bryce has eight lift-accessed slopes as well as a learning area at the base, with carpet lifts that take you to the top of the beginner terrain.

Bryce Resort also hosts a number of mountain bike and adventure races, weddings, an Oktoberfest, and other events year-round.

Getting to Bryce: Staff tell us that if you are using an online map service or GPS device to find Bryce, the results can be confusing as the route described may take you through back roads and residential areas. The best directions are found here.
