When October arrives, Shenandoah County, Virginia, becomes one of the best leaf-peeping destinations on the East Coast. Tucked into the northern Shenandoah Valley between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains, the crimson and gold ridgelines add to the small-town charm of places like Woodstock, Strasburg, and New Market. Color typically peaks in mid-to-late October, though higher elevations turn earlier. To time your visit well, check a foliage report. Shenandoah County is an easy weekend getaway from the D.C. area, at about a 90-minute drive.
Things to Do and Places to Eat in Shenandoah County
Start with the views. Woodstock Tower on Massanutten Mountain is a great pay-off with a sweeping look at the “Seven Bends” of the Shenandoah River, while Seven Bends State Park offers quieter riverside trails. History fans can walk the grounds of New Market Battlefield State Historical Park, and families often add a stop at Shenandoah Caverns for a cool underground contrast to the fall colors.
When it’s time to refuel, downtown Woodstock has a friendly local dining scene, including Woodstock Brewhouse for craft beer and hearty pub fare. For a leisurely afternoon, Muse Vineyards near Woodstock pours Virginia wines with valley views, and many local orchards and farm stands sell apples, cider, and pumpkins through the season.
Front Royal: The Gateway to Shenandoah National Park
Just east of the county line, Front Royal is the northern gateway to Shenandoah National Park and the starting point for the 105-mile Skyline Drive. The park’s north entrance is only minutes from downtown, making it an ideal base for a day of overlooks and short hikes. Many visitors stop at the Dickey Ridge Visitor Center early in the drive for maps and trail advice.
Back in town, Front Royal‘s walkable Main Street offers shops, cafés, and casual restaurants, and the Shenandoah River nearby offers paddling and scenic picnic spots. On the way in or out, a detour to The Apple House in nearby Linden is a must for cider doughnuts and apple butter. Weekends in October can bring heavy traffic on Skyline Drive, so arrive early and expect a park entrance fee.
