Bundle up. It’s time to ski!
Or board, or skate or tube…..
Massanutten Resort’s official opening day of winter sports season was November 23rd—their earliest opening day ever. Considering all the resort has to offer, the extra time will be appreciated by those who love the thrill of winter sports.

With an elevation of 2,922 feet, Massanutten offers wide groomed trails, a dedicated learner’s area, terrain parks, and night skiing. Skiers and riders who visit Massanutten will have access to 70 skiable acres, including 14 runs serviced by seven lifts. A daily report on conditions may be found here.

“Our focus is on skiing and winter sports, but Massanutten is a family resort and offers a complete family vacation,” said Kenny Hess, Director of Sports and Risk Management. “We’re easy to get to, have a fantastic waterpark, and offer a lot of amenities other resorts don’t have. We opened early this year and are really planning for a strong start to our season.”

Something new this year is “Easy Street” with “terrain-based” learning to ski or snowboard. What this means is you train on five specifically shaped snow features—the Flats, the Mini-Pipe, the Rollers, Banked Turns and the Perfect Slope.

“The goal of terrain based learning is to take the fear out of the whole thing,” said Hess. “The berms and the rollers we built make learning easier and more fun. Your speed is under control and you can think more about balance and build your confidence.”

Massanutten relies mostly on machine-based snow but also gets about three feet of snow a year.

Massanutten Resort is located near Harrisonburg, “just a few miles off I-81” added Hess. It encompasses 6,000 acres, featuring over 2,400 condos in a variety of styles. While skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and tubing are the focus at this time of year, it’s also home to two recreation centers, an Indoor/Outdoor WaterPark, two golf courses, a mountain bike park, horseback riding, fishing, three zip line experiences, an abundance of outdoor recreation options, and more. Entertainment, various dining options and even shopping are there for you to enjoy as well.

Information on different winter sports season packages is available here.
