Sarai’s Knife at JMU Forbes Center

When a vandal cuts the face of a Black student at Boston’s Classical Academy out of a photographic self-portrait on display in the school lobby, mixed-race collage artist and first-year teacher Sarai is asked to capitalize on the strong rapport she has with the student victim to investigate the incident. Pressure from the white Assistant Headmaster and troubling discoveries about the victim make Sarai question her effectiveness as a teacher and artist. When she discovers the truth behind the subsequent destruction of a portrait of the school’s founder, Sarai makes an unexpected choice that changes not only her future but the path the institution must take. Contains adult language, discussions of self-harm and portrayals of systemic racism.

Face the Forest 5K Obstacle Run

Join Poplar Forest for the 13th annual Face the Forest Obstacle Course Run! Challenge yourself to beat the clock as you take on a 3.1-mile obstacle race through the grounds of Thomas Jefferson’s Poplar Forest plantation, encountering obstacles (and some mud) along the way!

Entry fees will support children’s educational programming at Poplar Forest.

$45/person.
All registrations before July 25 are guaranteed a T-shirt in their size. After July 25th, registration increases to $50/person. Late registration and day-of registration increases to $60 beginning Thursday, August 14th.

Amateur astronomer Frank Perfetti will share with you his love for this great universe and talk about what you are actually looking at when you see the sky.  Presentations take place at Skyland , and will begin with Solar Viewing on the lower lawn area at 2:00 PM, followed by a Night Skies PP Presentation in the historic conference building beginning at 8:00 PM.
