Contributions: African Americans in the Shenandoah Valley

African Americans have contributed to the shaping of the Shenandoah Valley for more than 300 years and their influence can be found throughout the MSV Collection. With art, objects, and documents, Contributions tells the stories of those who endured enslavement, resisted oppression, and achieved success. Nearly 40 significant African Americans in the northern Shenandoah Valley’s history—from the 1700s to today—are highlighted in the exhibition.

Gardens of Glass: The Art of Craig Mitchell Smith

Thirty larger-than-life floral and other forms will be on display throughout the MSV gardens in the exhibition, Gardens of Glass: The Art of Craig Mitchell Smith. The Charlevoix, Michigan, artist has been creating floral forms in kiln-fired glass since 2006, and his revolutionary techniques have made him one of the most innovative kiln-glass artists in America. Smith’s artwork has been displayed in Epcot Center in Disney World, Missouri Botanical Garden, and many other locations. Exclusively for the MSV display, Smith will create a piece evoking apple blossoms.
