EPIC 100 Bucket List

Welcome to the Shenandoah Valley's ultimate go-to guide, an epic list of memorable places.

Epic 100 Bucket List

Shenandoah Caverns

What is now known as Shenandoah Caverns was discovered in 1884 by children playing in a limestone quarry being mined by Southern Railway. Official access to the cave system began in 1920 and Shenandoah Caverns was opened in May 1922. A full service hotel and gift shop were part of the grand opening, and the rail access made the caverns a great getaway. In 1930 an elevator was installed at Shenandoah Caverns, and it’s still the only cavern in Virginia with an elevator; quite the claim to fame.

The Shenandoah Caverns of today look a bit different than that 1922 grand opening. There is no longer a hotel, but there are additional attractions. Main Street of Yesteryear opened in 1996 and American Celebration on Parade opened in 2000. Main Street is a walk along “shop windows” showcasing antiques and parade props while American Celebration is home to the large parade floats themselves … some of them built by previous Shenandoah Caverns, owner Mr. Hargrove.
