Blue Ridge Tunnel
The Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel is a historical landmark and a must-visit destination for adventure seekers. Named for French immigrant and Virginia chief engineer Claudius Crozet, the tunnel was constructed under his direction and oversight to allow for westward train passage. When it opened on April 13, 1858 it was the longest railroad tunnel in North America.
Lace up your hiking boots and explore the 4,273-foot-long tunnel which runs through Afton Mountain in Virginia. The tunnel is not lit, so headlamps are strongly encouraged.
