Blackrock Summit
Within Shenandoah National Park is Blackrock Summit, a rocky talus slope, which is a jumble of large black rocks. It’s a great family-friendly hike, in fact, as it is a Kids in Parks TRACK Trail. Only 175 feet of elevation is gained on this one-mile circuit hike. Plus, it traces the Appalachian Trail.
Note that leashed pets are welcome but the leash can be no longer than six feet in length.
Location
Mile 84.4 on Skyline Drive
Shenandoah National Park
Blackrock Summit is in Albemarle County but the closest entrances to reach Black Rock Summit are Swift Run Gap at mile 65.5 or Rockfish Gap at mile 104.6 (the southernmost entrance near Waynesboro).
