“Seed Sower,” 2017, and “Seed,” 2017 by Kevin Box and Beth Johnson, Patinated Cast Bronze

The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley is a diverse destination, and its latest cause for exploration is Origami in the Garden, an incredible art installation featuring larger-than-life origami sculptures.

The giant metal works of art by Jennifer and Kevin Box and world-renowned collaborators are scattered throughout the formal gardens. Smaller paper and “unfolded” cast aluminum origami are displayed inside Glen Burnie House. Colorful and created with a variety of metals like bronze and steel, the sculptures range from 12 inches to 13 feet in size, and fit into the most perfect spaces.

Origami in the Garden is just part of the wonderful art experience at the MSV. The Trails at the MSV is not just a beautiful hike around a beautiful 90-acre property, but an art-dotted one, too. You’ll see the outdoor photography displays, an interactive mobile in a renovated silo, a carved gateway arch, and other architectural and earthen features. Explore The Trails from 7 a.m. to dusk daily. [Trail Map]

June 4 is National Trails Day and the MSV is a low-intensity trail experience you can do on your own terms or as an organized event. National Trails Day at the MSV will include yoga demonstrations, blood pressure checks, nutrition education, and storytelling. It’s a free event, but Origami in the Garden and Glen Burnie House tours require a ticket (save 20% by purchasing online).

Most (if not all) art exhibitions at the MSV include coordinated programming as well. Origami in the Garden is no exception.

  • June 8 @ 11 a.m.: Tiny Tales Story Time: Origami Fun (ages 2 to 5)
  • June 9 at 4:30 p.m.: Teen Art Club (ages 13 and up)
  • June 26 @ 1 p.m.: Adult Workshop: Origami Basics – sold out!
  • July 6 and July 27 @ 1 p.m.: Youth Workshop: Origami
  • July 16, July 19, August 16 and August 20 @ 10:3 a.m.: Garden Explorers: Origami
  • July 24 @ 1 p.m.: Adult Workshop: Creative Approaches to Origami

If you’ve ever wanted to experience the gorgeous Glen Burnie Gardens at night, your chance is coming! MSV at Night will be held June 24, July 22, and August 26 at 5 p.m. Peruse the grounds with friends while listening to live music and enjoying food trucks and a cash bar.

Don’t miss all of the amazing things going on at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley. There’s more live music, more organized yoga and trail walks, and more garden workshops to enjoy. Check out the calendar of events and make your plans today.
