Marvelous Mid-Winter Getaways for Grownups

Home » What's New » Marvelous Mid-Winter Getaways for Grownups

The Mid-winter Getaway may be as essential to adult relationships as actually looking up from your cell phone and talking to your spouse. Options for such a venture abound in the Shenandoah Valley. Picture a cabin surrounded by snowy woods, with a fireplace, hot tub and fine dining, and let your imagination roam freely. Below we offer six hideaways we think get high marks for a long mid-winter weekend of togetherness and romance. You can see many more in our Places to Stay section, and be sure to examine money-saving packages many offer here.

Shadow Mountain Escape
Stay in a timber frame cabin with Shenandoah National Park literally in the back yard. Various packages are available involving wine, winter, honeymoons and a focus on romance. The secluded, 15-acre property is minutes from Main Street in Luray. While you’re there, ask about the Blue Ridge Whisky-Wine Loop—more than a dozen wineries, vineyards, craft breweries and distilleries, connected by scenic drives and mountain views.

As for things to do in the brisk season, co-owner Karen Riddle was quick to point out a new offering–“Every Friday night from November 29th until the end of February we’re hosting a Winterfest in our Stone Courtyard with mulled German wine. Plus you can see our new Gothic Tower!” Bundle up around an outdoor fire pit to enjoy holiday treats, music and companionship. (Overnight guests, couples only. No additional charge.) Find more details on this, and their Valentine’s Package here.

Iris Inn
Combine beautifully designed accommodations with nearby wine tours and memorable meals. Located in Waynesboro, minutes from the northern entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Iris Inn is a complex of a main inn, cabins and cottages. Each was planned and built to provide the best mountain views possible.

“Complimentary breakfast” here doesn’t mean toast and coffee. Depending on the time of year, it might include: fresh fruit, eggs, waffles, French toast, bacon, sausage, and cheesy omelets. In fall and winter, sit down to pumpkin pancakes, buttery scrambled eggs, and warm sausage links, or fresh yogurt parfait, and their own Eggs Benedict. Iris Inn is closely connected to nearby restaurants and vineyards to enhance your stay. See their video for a closer look.

By The Side of the Road
Minutes from Harrisonburg, By the Side of the Road incorporates five cottages and one cozy apartment located on nine acres of a 1789 Manor House. You will find fishing pond and deck, plus all amenities expected in a high-end getaway accommodation – luxury bedding and linens, spa tubs or multi-faucet shower rooms, mini kitchens, gorgeous decor, with privacy and intimacy.

A great deal of Virginia history is associated with this house. It was pressed into service as a Civil War hospital and General Phil Sheridan made three unsuccessful attempts to burn it down. Interior brick walls kept the flames at bay.

By the Side of the Road is reported to be the first official bed and breakfast in Harrisonburg, and their website now announces they are Harrisonburg’s first official Getaway Lodging. Accommodations have been enhanced to offer mini kitchens, enabling guests to make their own light meals, in line with vacation rental properties in high demand.

This page of their website even helps you customize your own romantic itinerary.

L’Auberge Provencale
Located in White Post, about 70 miles west of Washington, DC, L’Auberge Provencale, is a romantic B&B with exciting dining, lovely suites and a variety of package deals involving food, cooking classes, massage/spa visits, etc. The restaurant, La Table Provencale, has been a proponent of Farm to Table for more than 30 years, working closely with local providers and harvesting many of their own fruits, vegetables and herbs. Food and drink experts like Wine Spectator have bestowed them many awards. The cuisine, the lovely décor and the antiques are all French-country influenced.

Special offers of interest to couples include Evening of Romance or the Royal Treatment Package. In the former, a dozen roses and champagne plus other amenities will get the evening underway. In the latter, sparkling wine, a 60-minute couples’ massage, and breakfast in your room are among the comforts.

South Court Inn
South Court Street in Luray is a quiet, historical street with clear views of Skyline Drive and peaks in Shenandoah National Park. The South Court Inn B&B is a two-acre hideaway on this street, with Victorian décor, a European feel and surrounded by lush gardens. It’s private and an easy walk to Luray’s Downtown. Luray Caverns, the Greenway, and performing arts are all close by. A full breakfast is included in the price of all rooms and packages, and coffee will be by your room by 8:00 a.m. The breakfast menu changes frequently but some combination of quiche, waffles, pancakes, muffins, scones, fruit, eggs and other delights are typical.

This impeccably neat and clean inn offers a number of special packages and add-ons. For example, it’s hard to beat their Romantic Dinner for Two during a mid-winter getaway for grownups. Choose from three different entrees– German “Rouladen” (beef roll ups) dinner, Chicken pasta dinner or Vegetarian lasagna dinner—and enjoy a bottle of local wine (red or white). Full details are found here.

Inn at Westshire Farms
Located in Staunton, the Inn’s nine guest rooms and suites create a small, intimate and private atmosphere. Choose from one of two accommodations—the Windsor House and the Millstone Barn. In the former you will find their extended stay suite and the Biltmore Conservatory — the Inn’s breakfast room –plus a cozy living room reminiscent of British elegance. Views of the Blue Ridge Mountains can be enjoyed from the Inn’s landscaped outdoor patios flanking the Conservatory.

The Millstone Barn is a restored Civil War-era structure with eight-guest rooms serving as the core of Inn’s accommodations. The Barn overlooks the 12 acres that make up the Inn’s pastoral grounds. A central vaulted-ceiling common area in the Millstone Barn supplies the perfect venue for socializing. Package deals involving massages, roses, bouquets, picnics and chocolate-covered strawberries will entice you all the more.
