Grand Caverns

Psst! Are you looking for a hidden gem this summer? We think Grand Caverns is quite a find for your summer collection. It’s the oldest continually operating show cave in the United States, and it’s right here in the Shenandoah Valley.

30-Second History Lesson …

Discovered by a trapper in 1804, the cave (called Weyers Cave at the time) was opened for its first tour in 1806. During the American Civil War, the cave was used by both Union and Confederate troops who literally left their marks in the form of signatures and graffiti. Nearly 3,000 men died within a five-mile radius of the cave. In 1973, Grand Caverns was declared a National Natural Landmark, and this year – 2023 – is the 50th anniversary of that designation.

There’s Actually Another Cave, Too …

Check it. There’s more than just the show cave of Grand Caverns. Fountain Cave is the in-the-dark spelunking adventure that requires a hard hat, boots, and headlamp. Free of electricity, this adventure tour may require climbing and crawling to reach the impressive rooms that await.

Back Up Top …

Enjoy a time-out beneath a picnic pavilion between activities. There are trails to hike, a playground for the kiddos, and even a round of mini golf that’s sure to fuel fun family competition. The park-like setting is quite inviting.

Before you depart this day of fun, try sluicing for gems, fossils, and arrowheads at the mine. We’re confident you’ll pull out something sweet!
