Descend Into Wonder: A Visit to Luray Caverns

Luray Caverns in Luray, Virginia is tucked into the Shenandoah Valley just minutes from Shenandoah National Park. The cavern is a cathedral of towering columns, rippling stone draperies, and mirror-still pools – all in a constant 54°F subterranean environment. A paved path makes it an easy and accessible attraction for most visitors.

KEY FEATURE: The Great Stalacpipe Organ, which taps stalactites of various sizes to produce sounds like xylophones and tuning forks, is one of the strangest musical instruments you’ll ever hear.

More than Caverns

General admission at Luray Caverns includes the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, Toy Town Junction, and the Shenandoah Heritage Village. Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours rather than just the hour or so the cave itself takes.

The Garden Maze, Rope Adventure Park, and Gem Sluice are separate tickets. If you like a bit of theater with your geology, book the Discovery Tour, a one-hour guided walk led by an interpreter in 1870s costume that runs once daily at 8:30 AM, capped at 30 people.

Hours and Admission

Luray Caverns is open every day of the year. Through the end of October, the hours are daily from 9 am to 6 pm. From November 1 through March 31, they shift to 9 am to 4 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 5 pm on weekends.

  • Self-Guided Tours: $36 for adults, $18 for children ages 6 to 12, and $34 for ages 62 and up.
  • Discovery Tour: $65 for adults and $35 for children. Children 5 and under are free.

PRO TIP: Arriving at the 9 AM opening can mean having the place nearly to yourself.

PLAN YOUR VISIT

Give yourself time to simply stand still beneath the stone and take it all in. Some places are worth a detour. This one is worth the descent.
