The heat is on and the waters are running cold this summer in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and West Virginia. Turn to a natural refresher like a river or lake to swim when you’re feeling toasty. We have just the spots in mind. Come take a look!

The Shenandoah River

Great for paddling, floating, fishing, and swimming, the Shenandoah River is an excellent choice for summer recreation. Enjoy entry points that also provide other assets, like accommodations or vessel rentals.

Shenandoah River State Park in Bentonville offers 5.2 miles of river frontage shoreline, picnic areas, campsites, and camping cabins. While there is not a designated swimming area, families certainly enjoy the entertainment the water provides. A car-top boat launch is available to set your kayaks and canoes afloat, plus there are outfitters nearby who can suit you up with whatever you lack for your grand adventure.

Shenandoah River Outfitters in Luray is a river guide service, an outfitter, and offers accommodations. Rough it at Camp Outback or enjoy the good life in one of their river cabins (hot tub included!).

The Potomac River

Make Harpers Ferry your base camp for a Potomac River adventure. River & Trail Outfitters, River Riders Family Adventure Resort, or Harpers Ferry Adventure Center will give you an exhilarating white water rafting trip to take on Class I-III rapids. After you conquer that bit of nature, check out the waterfront cabins or camping options at River Riders. They also have vacation rentals in town.

Sherando Lake

There are two lakes within the Sherando Lake Recreation Area – one for fishing and one that includes a sandy beach swimming area, which is the actual Sherando Lake. Just outside of Waynesboro and below the Blue Ridge Parkway, it’s a great place to camp, hike to connect to the Appalachian Trail, and certainly, enjoy the water.

Lake Arrowhead

Kayak or swim the 34-acre Lake Arrowhead in Luray. Though camping is available during special events, it is not open in general. Check out Camp Outback, Spacious Skies, Luray RV Resort, or Yogi Bears Jellystone Camp & Resort.
