African Americans have contributed to the shaping of the Shenandoah Valley for more than 300 years and their influence can be found throughout the MSV Collection. With art, objects, and documents, Contributions tells the stories of those who endured enslavement, resisted oppression, and achieved success.

In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the MSV will open the milestone exhibition Revolutionary Valley on July 4, 2026. Featuring powerful, untold stories and remarkable objects, many on public display for the first time, the exhibition tells the Shenandoah Valley’s story before, during, and after the American Revolution.

Gateways: African American Art from the Key Collection explores African American art through the personal lens of prominent collector Eric Key (b. 1957). On view at the Museum of Shenandoah Valley, Gateways presents more than 80 works spanning over a century of artistic expression, including paintings, sculpture, prints, and mixed media.
