In Waynesboro, it’s all about the river! The South River runs through Waynesboro’s downtown area and continues on through farmland and villages. The South, along with the Middle and North Rivers, make up the mighty Shenandoah as the branches converge at Port Republic, split to flow around Massanutten Mountain, and join again at Front Royal, near the Valley’s northern end.
Waynesboro puts on at least two major festivals each spring, highlighting the advantage of having a river in your downtown. The city also celebrates fall with Apple Days and Fall Foliage festivals in October.
While in town, visit the P. Buckley Moss Museum on US 340, off I-64 at Exit 94. Dedicated to the art of Patricia Buckley Moss, the museum houses a permanent display of the artist’s work. Guided tours are available, and a large gift shop offers prints, etchings, originals, and gift items. The artist opens her home, The Barn, several times a year to meet collectors and sign her work.
In downtown Waynesboro, you’ll also find the best work of Virginia’s finest artisans, from quilts to furniture, lamps to baskets, at the Artisans Center of Virginia, a juried retail and exhibition gallery.
Waynesboro is conveniently located just off the famed Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Maine to Georgia and draws thousands of hikers each year. It’s also where the Skyline Drive meets the Blue Ridge Parkway, two of America’s favorite scenic drives.
