Only one place in America successfully ties together founding father, George Washington, and founding mother (of country music, anyway) Patsy Cline. What place has the audacity and the flair to do it? None other than Winchester, VA. This charming city weaves history and culture into a wonderful web of things to do.
Be sure not to miss the world-class Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, a regional history museum dedicated to interpreting the art, history, and culture of the Shenandoah Valley. The Museum anchors a regional history museum complex that also includes the Glen Burnie Historic House and Gardens.
Another neat place to stop is the Old Courthouse Civil War Museum, where you can see a unique collection of relics and soldiers’ graffiti on the walls. Built in 1840, it was used to house prisoners and treat wounded by both sides during the Civil War.
If all the history isn’t enough, country singer Patsy Cline was from Winchester, too! Folks here are just crazy about her. There are ten locations on the Patsy Cline self-guided tour, and you can pick up a copy of the tour map at the Visitor Center.
A great way to explore modern culture is through shopping, and Winchester has this covered. Park your car in one of the handy downtown garages, and spend an afternoon on the Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall. It’s jam-packed with great locally-owned shops and unique boutiques and galleries.
To do justice to all that Winchester and Frederick County have to offer, you’ll want to stay over at least one night—preferably two or three. The area boasts a wide variety of lodging options to fit any budget, taste, or travel party, from first-rate hotels to upscale historic bed & breakfasts.
