During a recent river trip here in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley, my wife and I were paddling our worries away when it occurred to me that another summer travel season in the Shenandoah Valley is rapidly coming to a close. Our daughter is back at school, Labor Day is right around the corner, and the fall kaleidoscope of colors will soon be revealed. But there are still plenty of places to go and things to do during your late-summer Shenandoah getaway, especially if you’re a festival lover.
Kick off your Labor Day weekend this Saturday, Sept. 4 at one of the mid-Atlantic region’s longest running outdoor music events, the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival in Orkney Springs, Va. Final weekend performances feature Cherryholmes on Saturday and the Tom Cunningham Orchestra on Sunday, both starting at 7 p.m.
Then on Sunday, Sept. 5, head east from Harrisonburg, Va. on U.S. 33 over to Massanutten Resort where more music and good times will be shared by all at the SunTrust Mountain Jamboree. With four different bands, loads of kids’ activities and plenty of food vendors, there’s no better way to spend a beautiful Sunday afternoon and evening in the Shenandoah Valley, especially since Monday is a holiday!
These are just two on a long list of Shenandoah Valley festivals and events to choose from, so be sure to check out our calendar of events for everything else going on in the Valley this month and beyond.
Yes, it’s true… summer is almost over, but fall in the Shenandoah Valley is certainly an amazing time to experience our beautiful region. In our next issue, we’ll highlight a myriad of fall festivities you can enjoy when you come to visit. From harvest festivals to corn mazes, from hayrides to leaf peeping, the Valley offers something for everyone.
Rent a cabin in the mountains or stay at one of our quaint bed & breakfasts. Take a ride on Skyline Drive through Shenandoah National Park, or enjoy the vistas of the scenic Blue Ridge Parkway – both will offer spectacular views of the fall colors. Beginning Oct. 1, please be sure to call our Leaf Hotline at 1-800-434-LEAF (5323) for weekly foliage updates.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
