Lexington / Buena Vista / Rockbridge County, Virginia

I-81 Exits 195, 191, and 188A-B. From one end of Rockbridge County to the other, you’ll find a landscape that stirs the mind, spirit, and intellect. The area is known for its history, charm, and scenic beauty.

Start your visit in Lexington, beginning first with the Stonewall Jackson House on Washington Street, the only home ever owned by Confederate Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. Virginia Military Institute and the VMI Museum is close by. Cadets give walking tours of the Post, starting at the George C. Marshall Museum & Library.

Ready for charm? Spend an afternoon strolling the pressed brick sidewalks downtown, browsing in the unique shops and galleries. From antiques to fine lingerie, elegant pumps to delectable handmade chocolates, Lexington has treasures for everyone—and great restaurants, like the Southern Inn Restaurant. Or at the Red Hen Restaurant – a unique farm-to-table, down-home dining experience whose chef, Collin Donnelly, was just named Cooking Light magazine’s 2012 Small Town Chef of the Year!

Discover some of the region's most unique lodging, Hampton Inn Col Alto boasts beautifully appointed Manor Rooms that are a special treat. Rooms are decorated according to the local name they bear. Guests are spoiled with a glass of wine,  turn down service with chocolates on the pillow, and awaken to breakfast in bed!

As for the scenery, it’s all around you! If you have an hour or two for something really spectacular, take a drive to Goshen Pass, an awesome three-mile-long mountain gorge formed by the Maury River. Play golf at the Visita Links at Glen Maury Park with sets off tees that can match your game.

For more out-of-this-world scenery, head south of Lexington to Virginia’s Natural Bridge, a world-renowned rock bridge once owned by Thomas Jefferson, and one of the nation’s most visited natural wonders. You can make a day of it by stopping by the Toy Museum at Natural Bridge, as well as the Natural Bridge Zoological Park.

And speaking of zoos, you won’t want to miss Virginia Safari Park. It’s Virginia’s only drive-through zoo, featuring over 700 animals like antelope, zebra, deer, bison, elk, and many more. The kids will love it!
